Remember, the greatest impact is DirectlyTo.
The Greater Mt. Carmel Baptist Church, located in Baton Rouge, LA., sponsors Boy Scouts of America (BSA), Troop 198. The BSA is one of the largest youth organizations in the United States. The goal of the BSA is to train youth in responsible citizenship, character development, and self-reliance through participation in a wide range of outdoor activities, educational programs, and partnerships with community organizations. Specifically, Troop 198 caters to an inner city community, many of the boys within the troop come from low-income, single parent households. For over fifty years, Troop 198 has provided these young men with both a structured environment and development opportunities they may not have had otherwise.
In addition, Troop 198 has produced several Eagle Scouts. The Eagle Scout award is the highest achievement in scouting, and only a small percentage of Boy Scouts (2% since the organizations' inception in 1912) are granted this prestigious honor. Notable Eagle Scouts include Gerald Ford (38th President of the United States), Michael Bloomberg, Steven Spielberg, Neil Armstrong, Robert Gates (Former Secretary of Defense), Guy Bluford Jr. (first African-American in space) and myself Jermaine Jack ;-). I am also a product of Troop 198, and I can honestly say that my experiences within the BSA prepared me for the challenges of adulthood.
Unfortunately, Troop 198 has recently struggled to continue its service to our youth, because of insufficient funding. The troop desperately needs resources and new equipment to continue to provide the current members with a proper scouting experience. Items such as new fishing rods, sleeping bags, canoes and hiking boots are just a few of the items that we currently need. Please consider donating to this worthy cause, and helping to further enrich the lives of some well-deserving young men.
Thank you for your support!
