Hi. I am a low-income renter and a mother two children. One child has a mold allergy. I have a deteriorating chimney and our landlord is unwilling to pay to have it fixed.
There was a lot of rain last year and the water came straight down into the deteriorating chimney which may have been enough to set off the chronic mold growth within the dirt in the cracks. This source of mold has caused my intelligent, very motivated and successful 11-year-old to be sick last winter and lose time out from school.
It is hard to find places to rent that meet my own special health needs. I need to live away from tenants who use scented products, so moving is an unlikely option. My landlord says she is willing to have it fixed if I can get assistance to pay for it to be fixed.
Chimney repair people put a cap on it so that water no longer comes directly down into the firebox. They said the chimney box needs rebuilt, the cap is cracked and the chimney needs sealed to be water-tight. My landlord said the price was too high at about $4000.00 so I got another chimney specialist to come out and see if they could repair the firebox without rebuilding it. They said they could and they gave an estimate of $1495.00 plus tax. This amount she will not pay as well.
The chimney may well be a code violation for not being weatherproof (I am not sure until they come out) and I could report it which could force our landlord to fix it, but that only puts us at greater risk of being displaced as she would likely resent her hand being forced to fix it, thereby forcing us to move. It is a very competitive rental market where we live which is very likely to lead us into homelessness at this point.
We need a more secure and peaceful means to keep our household air healthy for my 11-year-old and for all three of us.
I can't find assistance through any local program although I have made endless calls, and I do not like to compromise my daughter's privacy to raise money to help her. This just seems wrong that there is no other way to get assistance to fix this than by going public.
To preserve some level of privacy for my daughter I am leaving her nameless here and our location anonymous. We live in a big expensive city in the United States where I am trying to remain, to keep her stable in the school she has established her networks in. Many low-income families have been priced out, but it is my hometown as well.
Here is the company's estimate, a reputable local chimney repair company to whom your kind donations will go directly to to preserve our stable housing and my daughter's health.
THE FIREBOX WOULD HAVE THE BACK WALL REPAIRED WITH BLACK FIRE CEMENT AS WELL
AS THE SIDE WALLS AND BLENDED IN TO MATCH. THERE WOULD BE A FIRE BRICK
SET IN THE ASH DUMP DOOR AS TO CLOSE THIS OFF AS THERE MAY BE MOISTURE FUMES
COMING FROM THIS AREA. THE TOP OR CONCRETE CROWN WOULD BE PREPPED AND ANY
CRACKS FILLED IN AND A CLEAR RUBBERIZED MEMBRANE APPLIED TO THE TOP OR CONCRETE
CROWN. THIS IS AN EXCELLENT PRODUCT THAT PREVENTS THE CONCRETE CROWN FROM EVER CRACKING OR DETERIORATING AGAIN AS IT EXPANDS AND CONTRACTS WITH ANY CHANGES IN TEMPERATURES. IT IS ALSO AN EXCELLENT WATERPROOFING MATERIAL. THE CHIMNEY WOULD BE WIRE BRUSHED ABOVE THE ROOF LINE REMOVING AS MUCH MOSS AND MILDEW AS POSSIBLE. THERE ARE A FEW AREAS AROUND THE CHIMNEY WHERE THE MORTAR
IS MISSING THAT WOULD BE PREPPED AND FILLED IN. THE METAL COUNTER FLASHING WOULD
BE PAINTED WITH A HIGH GRADE RUSTULEOM PAINT. THE ENTIRE CHIMNEY ABOVE THE ROOF
LINE WOULD BE TREATED WITH A HIGH GRADE SEALER THAT WILL PROTECT THE BRICKS AND MORTAR FROM ABSORBING RAIN WATER AND LEAKING INTO THE HOUSE WHICH WILL CAUSE
FURTHER DAMAGE IF NOT RECTIFIED. IT IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT THIS WORK IS COMPLETED
AS IT WILL CONTINUE TO GET WORSE.
COST = $1495 +TAX"
With tax, and operating cost for this site (so they can continue helping others in need) we need to raise $1,710.28 altogether.
Thank you for any contribution you can make!
