As we begin our new year, we wanted to take a moment and share with you one of the best-kept secrets in Northeast Florida—Jacksonville Harmony Chorus!
Affectionately known as Jax Harmony, Jacksonville Harmony Chorus, Inc. is a member of Sweet Adelines International, a non-profit 501(c)(3) women’s organization and Florida's premiere a cappella women's show chorus, performing in the barbershop style with approximately 30,000 members worldwide in choruses and quartets. Our mission is to educate, entertain, and continue the tradition of a cappella barbershop harmony, a mission we’ve been fulfilling for over 50 years now.
We are a group of women of all ages and walks of life who joined the organization for the music but found so much more. Fun, friendships, and fantastic music fuel our passion for this hobby. We thrive on entertaining Jacksonville as we put on shows or cabarets each year, perform at events around the city (both public and private), and even open sporting events with the National Anthem.
Under the direction of Master Director Ann Gooch, Jax Harmony also enjoys the competition aspect of this organization. Each spring, choruses compete at the regional level, and Jax Harmony traditionally returns from these events with medals, usually in the top 3. Chorus and quartet winners at the regional level go on to compete at the international level. Having competed at the international level four times, we are proud to have earned 1st, 2nd and two 4th place medals for the mid-sized chorus category worldwide! Additionally, we were invited and performed on stage in Carnegie Hall several years ago and have been invited back to perform again in 2018! How exciting!
In addition to competing and performing, Jax Harmony's primary focus is on continuing education, striving always to improve our craft of barbershop singing (sometimes referred to as the “black belt” of a cappella singing). Each rehearsal dedicates time to vocal instruction and improvement. We are fortunate to receive training from visiting coaches throughout the year who are highly esteemed for their knowledge of the art of barbershop.
As you might imagine, none of these achievements has come without costs to our members. Expenses include music, coaching fees, costumes, rehearsal hall rental, and equipment and travel expenses, to name a few. Consequently, we are seeking support to meet our educational goals through coaching and performing which includes a much needed replacement of our sound system.
